Barbara Foushee

Title: Commissioner

Municipality: Town of Carrboro

Position Interested In: At Large - Elected Officials

Tell us why you would like to serve in a leadership position at the League. In particular, specify goals you would like to accomplish as an officer or board member and indicate how, if attained, they will help to achieve Vision 2030 – the League’s future vision of how cities and towns will operate in 2030.

I am interested in serving to continue the promotion of the League's vision of governmental excellence, dialogue amongst elected officials, advocacy and a collaborative approach to statewide municipal issues. I would bring to the table a very deep history of community engagement, diversity and inclusion efforts and civic engagement in some key organizations such as the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP and the OWASA Board of Directors where I previously held leadership roles. This type of knowledge could be key in helping to obtain some of the goals in Vision 2030. It is important that community members understand the roles/responsibilities of the municipalities they live in; educating all sectors of our communities is a key piece of the puzzle. I spend a good bit of time ensuring that those that aren't "in the know" become versed on what services are available to them as taxpayers.

I work tirelessly for ways to level the playing field and feel that this demonstrates the value that a municipality adds to the community's quality of life. Technology has become a key part of how we reach our community members and there has to expansion of broadband in the future so that there is equitable access for everyone. Being collaborative in general, especially with our county and regional partners increases resources and expands bandwidth for sustainable solutions to some of the issues that plague our communities. Adapting to any change in our communities requires diverse leadership that is able to provide guidance and direction under any circumstances, including cultural and demographic shifts. The diverse voices at the table will continue to bring that unique perspective that will serve all community members and not leave anyone behind. I will be committed to the 6 operating principles and the 5 planning pillars that are outlined in Vision 2030 if selected to serve.
