Chrelle Booker

Title: Mayor Pro Tem

Municipality: Town of Tryon

Position Interested In: Second Vice President, At Large - Elected Officials

Tell us why you would like to serve in a leadership position at the League. In particular, specify goals you would like to accomplish as an officer or board member and indicate how, if attained, they will help to achieve Vision 2030 – the League’s future vision of how cities and towns will operate in 2030.

The buzz words for today are: Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, equity, American Rescue Plan Act, Distressed Utility Systems and equality to name a few. I was recently appointed to the National League of Cities' Information Technology and Communications Federal Advocacy Committee. Together with the NC League of Municipalities, weekly briefings from the White House Intergovernmental Affairs Agency and updates from the Federal Communications Commission, I receive a wealth of information and direction. A leadership position with the League will allow me to share this information and be of service to the League, our 540 cities, towns and North Carolinian’s. My participation with these organizations as well as others, have afforded me knowledge about the American Rescue Plan Act, this is valuable for those we represent. When the FCC opened up a period to submit broadband concerns, I wrote a letter on behalf of rural populations. I feel that I was a part of the unanimous decision to implement the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, with emphasis on broadband equity and inclusion.

From the late 1800's until 2017, this was the time frame for my town the elect its first Black female Commissioner and 2019 for the entire county to have its first female Mayor Pro Tempore. That female is me. Currently I am the only elected female official in the county and the only Person of Color. It is my desire to bring awareness to the lack of equity and equality for the need of female voices in our local government, especially small towns and cities. I know there are other cities and towns on the NCLM's radar that share these issues and concerns. It is our duty to help our citizens, cities, towns and those who are new and adapting to our communities, prosper, thrive, stay healthy and hopefully lessen the amount of stress in their lives.

I will encourage our citizens to take part in decision making on behalf of their families' future, and the future of their communities, cities and towns. I would like to make North Carolina amazing, by generously sharing the resources that are shared with me through a leadership position with the NC League of Municipalities. These actions will help to achieve Vision 2030 as neighbor help neighbor and everyone making a conscience effort to care about each other and to work toward common goals. This includes those in government. If respect is encouraged, knowledge shared, peace and harmony will prevail and our state will flourish. This would be awesome!

Thanks for your consideration to appoint me for either the First Vice President or At-Large Elected Official and I look forward to the decisions made by you, the nominating committee.
