Position Interested In: At Large Affiliate Organization Representative (SWANC)

Tell us why you would like to serve in a leadership position at the League. In particular, specify goals you would like to accomplish as an officer or board member and indicate how, if attained, they will help to achieve Vision 2030 – the League’s future vision of how cities and towns will operate in 2030.

Since the development of SWANC around 2009-2010, I have worked with NCLM (first Erin Wynia, then Sarah Collins) and became interested in the work that NCLM does to benefit municipalities in North Carolina. Like SWANC, I feel that demonstrating the value of municipal services to its citizens is a key principal that has been historically overlooked. As a potential board member, I'd like to help change that by contributing to educational campaigns and fostering better understanding and enhancing relationships between municipalities and its citizens. Whether it be through technology, partnerships with other forms of government or even the private sector, I honestly feel that the value of municipal services is often misunderstood and underappreciated. I'd like to help change that for the better!

Tell us about your experience as a municipal official. You may want to include information on your service on the municipal governing body, other related boards and special areas of interest.

While my current role and position is as a city employee (staff), I serve or have served on numerous boards throughout the state to advance science and policy related to clean water. I served on the APWA Stormwater board from 2009-2019, I have served on the legislatively appointed Nutrient Scientific Advisory Board (NSAB) from 2009 to present.

Tell us about your educational background, professional experience, and/or community or civic activities.

I received a bachelors of science in Natural Resource Management from Western Carolina University in 1990. I served with the US Forest Service for four years and the NC Forest Service for one year. I worked with Mecklenburg County Department of Environmental Protection for four years. And I have been with the City of Greensboro for almost 22 years now, both as a water quality supervisor and as the storm water manager with the Water Resources Department.

Locally, I have served on the Downtown Greenway Oversight Committee since 2008, as well as numerous internal committees. I served as a scout leader for over 10 years, served as a coach for a youth mountain biking league, and I'm actively involved in several committees at church.

Have You Participated in Any NCLM Events or Committees?

  • Regional Meetings

  • Affiliate Organizations: SWANC member since inception. One of my staff members recently served as President of SWANC (2018).

Please provide any other information you would like the Nominations Committee to consider.

I am passionate about protecting the environment, but fully realize the need for balanced economic growth to maintain municipal prosperity. It has been my careers objective to attempt to find that balance!
