Title: Council Member

Municipality: Town of Tarboro

Position Interested In: District Representative - District 5

Tell us why you would like to serve in a leadership position at the League. In particular, specify goals you would like to accomplish as an officer or board member and indicate how, if attained, they will help to achieve Vision 2030 – the League’s future vision of how cities and towns will operate in 2030.

I would like to serve to support the leagues vision of 2030 because I am interested in ensuring that the rural municipalities can obtain resources that will help them thrive. I believe with the right supports such that the league offers, our rural communities will be able to offer their citizens services and goods in their own town. I believe by allowing municipalities to exercise more control of their revenues, their structure and choose how best to function, will foster a thriving community. I especially agree with the concept of the league's ability to bolster the development of city officials through their offering of training and support. The 2030 Vision's six operating principles and five planning pillars are strategies that I believe will be a great asset for municipalities to move forward.

Tell us about your experience as a municipal official. You may want to include information on your service on the municipal governing body, other related boards and special areas of interest.

My experience as a municipal official has been since May 2012. I have been effective with initiating changes with ordinances and policies and procedures that were outdated or no longer served their intended purposes. I serve on the Edgecombe County Human Relations Committee and the Edgecombe Animal Advisory Committee. I serve on these committees because I have an interest in supporting the citizens with issues in and around their communities and the welfare of their animals. I have been instrumental with representing the town on the animal advisory committee by actively participating with negotiations to have a joint venture in building a new animal shelter to house both town and county animals.

Tell us about your educational background, professional experience, and/or community or civic activities.

My educational background includes being an honor student and successfully completing an Associates double major from Edgecombe Community College in Accounting and Business Administration in 2000. I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Wesleyan College with a BA in Sociology and a Minor in Business. My professional background includes owning a small business with my spouse for 20 years, managing a Finance company for 6 years, and 10 years as a case manager for mental health.

I volunteer with my church as the director for community outreach center during disasters and monthly food banking. I volunteer with a non-profit for ex-offenders called It Starts with You.
