Municipality: Town of Sylva
Position Interested In: District Representative (District 12)
Tell us why you would like to serve in a leadership position at the League. In particular, specify goals you would like to accomplish as an officer or board member and indicate how, if attained, they will help to achieve Vision 2030 – the League’s future vision of how cities and towns will operate in 2030.
I currently serve as District Representative for District 12 and would like to serve another term to continue being an advocate for small rural towns as well as the larger municipalities in western NC. I feel that the NCLM is one of the greatest assets that NC Cities and Towns have and that the League's plan, Vision 2030, will help municipalities understand how to survive through challenges facing them today, and it will chart the way for municipalities to thrive. I want to be part of building that plan. This year, recovering after the pandemic/quarantine, it is even more important.
Tell us about your experience as a municipal official. You may want to include information on your service on the municipal governing body, other related boards and special areas of interest.
I served as a Sylva Town Commissioner for 8 years and as Vice Mayor for 2 of those years.
I currently serve as Mayor of Sylva, having been elected to that position in 2015.
I have served on our County's Water and Sewer Authority as board member and Chair.
I was a founding member of Sylva Partners in Renewal, an organization of business and community members that helped revitalize downtown Sylva, and I also worked with Town leaders to get Sylva designated as a NC Main Street Town(1995) (the smallest NC town to receive that designation). I still work everyday to make Sylva the best little town in NC! I will help other towns and municipalities in District 12 become great places to work and live.
Tell us about your educational background, professional experience, and/or community or civic activities.

Owned and operated (with my husband) two successful small businesses in Sylva, NC and Cashiers, NC.
Purchased one of the oldest businesses in Sylva along with my husband and 2 business partners.

I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the NC League of Municipalities, representing District 12, which includes the cities and towns of Western North Carolina. I would like to serve a second term on the Board. I feel I have contributed to the work of the League these past 2 years, including Co-Chairing the League’s Policy Committee which helped develop the 2021-22 League Legislative Goals. I worked with others to contact all the mayors in District 12 and in NC, in a letter writing campaign to our Congressional representative concerning revenues lost by NC cities and towns during the Covid pandemic. I have participated in a press conference with legislators concerning the lack of Broadband in some areas of our State which in my opinion is one of the most urgent issues facing NC. I have enjoyed working as one with the League and other leaders to advance all municipalities in North Carolina.
I ask for your vote. Thank you. Lynda Sossamon
