Title: Mayor Pro Tem

Municipality: Town of Weldon

Position Interested In: District Representative - District 5

Tell us why you would like to serve in a leadership position at the League. In particular, specify goals you would like to accomplish as an officer or board member and indicate how, if attained, they will help to achieve Vision 2030 – the League’s future vision of how cities and towns will operate in 2030.

I was first elected as a Weldon Town Commissioner in Nov. 2019. Historically, our board hasn't been closely involved with the League, a position reinforced by the pandemic and the shuttered nature of our existence during that time. I did rely heavily on the League Bulletins and found numerous articles in "Southern City" which were pertinent to many of our situations. Weldon is a small municipality but is representative of many of the other towns in District 5. One goal would be to encourage other cities and towns in District 5 to work together to identify strengths to help reduce population decline, increase the use of technology, and become more aware of the challenges of climate change. I feel that dramatic increases in the larger urban area populations will create potential growth areas for smaller, rural areas. Everyone doesn't want to be confined to a 10-story high rise and an hour commute to work.

Tell us about your experience as a municipal official. You may want to include information on your service on the municipal governing body, other related boards and special areas of interest.

This year I was elected Mayor pro tem and treasurer of the Halifax County Intergovernmental Agency. I also serve on the Roanoke Canal Trail Commission which combines the efforts of Weldon and Roanoke Rapids to maintain and increase use of the 7-mile trail linking our towns.

Tell us about your educational background, professional experience, and/or community or civic activities.

I hold a bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University and have recently retired from a 25-year career as regional training coordinator for Primerica Life Insurance. I'm an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Roanoke Rapids and enjoy music and gardening.

Have You Participated in Any NCLM Events or Committees?

Please provide any other information you would like the Nominations Committee to consider.

My submission is late as I just discovered yesterday that there were no candidates for District 5, and I feel strongly that participation in the League would help our district in setting goals, working together, and enriching our communities. This may spill over into help for other similar districts, also.
