Position Interested In: Elected Official At-Large

Tell us why you would like to serve in a leadership position at the League. In particular, specify goals you would like to accomplish as an officer or board member and indicate how, if attained, they will help to achieve Vision 2030 – the League’s future vision of how cities and towns will operate in 2030.

I have served as a NCLM Board Member for several years in the past and I am requesting to be reappointed in the next selection. I know that Vision 2030 and the future of Interstate Highway 42 from Raleigh to Carteret County will bring many challenges to Eastern North Carolina and I would like to share my talents to meet any challenge that may arise.

The challenges we will be facing are lack of housing,  infrastructure and population growth.  We have begun addressing these goals in Carteret County through planning and zoning with the approval of numerous new housing projects. The 2030 Vision, its  Six Operating Principles,  the Five Planning Pillars and knowing our challenges  will give us the right course to follow to make 2030 successful.

Tell us about your experience as a municipal official. You may want to include information on your service on the municipal governing body, other related boards and special areas of interest.

I am the current Mayor of Newport and have held this position for 10 years. I am also currently employed as a Deputy Sheriff serving as a Major in the Carteret County Sheriffs’ Office.  As Mayor of Newport, I have attended numerous schools and trainings with the NCLM and the UNC School of Government focusing on Planning/Zoning, and Finance. Newport has continued to grow over the past ten years under my leadership.

We have commissioned a new waste water plant, opened numerous new businesses, to include large corporations, such as Walmart and Smithfield Chicken & BBQ.
